You've built the skill. You can read an INCI list, spot isopropyl myristate in the top five, and tell a client with confidence that their moisturizer is a problem. That part of the job is handled.

Then they ask the obvious follow-up: "Okay — so what should I use?"

And the honest answer, for a lot of estheticians, is a slightly vague one. "Something lighter." "Look for gel textures." "Avoid oils." All defensible, none actionable at a store shelf. The client goes to Ulta, faces four hundred moisturizers, picks the one that says "non-comedogenic" on the front, and — since that term is entirely unregulated — has a decent chance of buying something with the same class of ingredient you just flagged. The gap isn't in your knowledge of what's bad. It's that avoidance lists were built as avoidance lists. They stop at the flag. What closes the loop is knowing the replacement — not a product recommendation, but an ingredient-level swap, so the client can evaluate anything they pick up.

Why Swaps Have to Be Function-for-Function

Here's the mistake that makes swap advice fail: treating all pore-clogging ingredients as interchangeable and all safe ingredients as interchangeable. They're not. Ingredients are in a formula to do a specific job, and if you remove one without replacing the job, the product stops working.

Coconut oil in a body butter is doing something structurally different than propylene glycol in a toner. One is a rich occlusive emollient providing slip and barrier support. Match within the category and the replacement product will actually feel and perform like what the client gave up. That's what makes the swap stick, and compliance is the whole game.

The Swap List

Lightweight Emollients

These are the esters that make a lotion feel silky rather than greasy. They're also the single most common source of comedogenic risk in leave-on products, because "silky" and "pore-clogging" are frequently produced by the same chemistry.

  • Isopropyl myristate (rating: 5) — Used for non-greasy emollient slip. Swap to: squalane or caprylic/capric triglyceride.
  • Isopropyl palmitate (rating: 4) — Used for emollience and spreadability. Swap to: squalane, caprylic/capric triglyceride, or glycerin.
  • Myristyl myristate (rating: 4) — Used for emollience and a powdery finish. Swap to: squalane or dicaprylyl carbonate.
  • Ethylhexyl palmitate (rating: 4) — Used as an emollient, especially in SPF and foundation. Swap to: dicaprylyl carbonate, diheptyl succinate, or squalane.
  • Isopropyl linoleate (rating: 4) — Used as an emollient in sunscreens and serums. Swap to: caprylic/capric triglyceride, squalane, or jojoba oil.

The pattern to teach clients: the word "isopropyl" followed by a fatty acid name — myristate, palmitate, linoleate — is a reliable red flag on a leave-on product. It's a small enough rule to remember in a store aisle.

Why squalane is the workhorse swap: it delivers a comparable lightweight, non-greasy emollient feel and rates 0 on the comedogenic scale. It's the single most useful ingredient name to give a client, because it's now common enough to find at every price point. Caprylic/capric triglyceride is the other frequent flyer — coconut-derived, which alarms clients who've learned coconut oil is a 5, but the fractionation process produces a completely different, much lighter material. Worth explaining, because the client who has just learned "coconut bad" will otherwise reject a perfectly good product.

Rich Occlusives and Butters

The "nourishing" category. Marketing loves these ingredients, which is why they end up in products bought specifically by people with dry, compromised, acne-prone skin — the worst possible match.

  • Coconut oil (rating: 5) — Used as a rich occlusive emollient. Swap to: jojoba oil, sunflower oil, or hemp seed oil.
  • Cocoa butter (rating: 4) — Used for heavy occlusion and structure. Swap to: mango butter or kokum butter.
  • Unrefined shea butter (rating: 4) — Used as a rich emollient for barrier support. Swap to: refined shea butter, grapeseed oil, or sunflower oil.
  • Palm oil (rating: 4) — Used for emollience and structure in soaps and creams. Swap to: sunflower oil, safflower oil, or jojoba oil.
  • Wheat germ oil (rating: 5) — Used as a rich emollient and vitamin E delivery vehicle. Swap to: squalane, rosehip oil, or argan oil.

The nuance on shea butter: refined shea rates considerably lower than unrefined, so this is one case where the same ingredient name can be fine or not depending on processing — and labels rarely specify. If a client loves a shea product, that's a reason to screen the whole formula rather than reject the ingredient outright.

Mineral oil deserves a mention. It has a terrible reputation in clean-beauty circles and rates 0. Kligman published a direct reappraisal arguing petrolatum is not comedogenic in rabbits or humans.

For a client with a badly compromised barrier who needs pure occlusion, it's frequently the better choice than the "natural" butter they were reaching for. This one takes some client education, but it's a useful hill to be right about.

Plant Oils

Where "natural equals safe" does the most damage. Plant oils vary enormously, and the intuitive ranking is often backwards.

The oleic-versus-linoleic distinction is the useful mental model here. Oils high in oleic acid tend to be thicker, more occlusive, and more problematic for acne-prone skin. Oils high in linoleic acid tend to be lighter and better tolerated. That's a large part of why hemp seed, grapeseed, and sunflower oil generally sit at the safe end while avocado and olive oil sit higher.

Safe plant oils worth naming for clients: jojoba oil (0 — technically a wax ester, structurally close to human sebum), hemp seed oil (0), argan oil (0), grapeseed oil (1), sunflower oil (1), rosehip oil (1).

Emulsifiers and Thickeners

The quiet middle of the list. These rate low — mostly 2s — and get over-flagged by clients who've found a strict pore-clogging list and decided everything on it is disqualifying.

  • Cetearyl alcohol (rating: 2) — A very common emulsifier and usually fine. Screen the rest of the formula before blaming it.
  • Cetyl alcohol (rating: 2) — Same. This is not the drying kind of alcohol — worth clarifying with clients.
  • Glyceryl stearate (rating: 2) — Extremely common and low concern at typical use levels.
  • PEG-40 stearate (rating: 2) — Low concern. Alternatives exist, including polysorbate-80 and decyl glucoside, but are rarely necessary.
  • Acetylated lanolin alcohol (rating: 4) — Genuinely worth avoiding in leave-on products. Swap to: beeswax, candelilla wax, or synthetic emollients.
  • Laneth-10 (rating: 4) — A lanolin derivative, mostly found in haircare. Worth avoiding.

This is where your judgment earns its keep. A client with a strict list will reject a good product over cetyl alcohol at position 14 while missing the isopropyl myristate at position 3. Part of your job is teaching that comedogenicity is a spectrum weighted by concentration and position, not a binary. A 2 near the bottom of a list is noise. A 4 or 5 in the top five is signal.

Solvents and Humectants

  • Propylene glycol (rating: 3) — Used as a solvent, humectant, and penetration enhancer. Swap to: glycerin, butylene glycol, or sorbitol.
  • Hexylene glycol (rating: 2) — Used as a solvent and for viscosity control. Swap to: butylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, or pentylene glycol.
  • Algae extract (rating: 5) — Marketed as a hydrating active. Swap to: hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, or niacinamide.

Algae extract is the one to flag hardest in this group. It rates a 5, it's in a huge number of hydrating masks, gels, and serums, and it's marketed as a premium marine active — so clients are paying more for it and are emotionally invested. It shows up constantly in exactly the "soothing hydrating" products someone with irritated acne reaches for.

Give the Client the Safe List, Not Just the Bad List

The reframe that improves compliance: instead of sending someone home with a list of a hundred names to avoid, send them home with a short list to look for.

The acne-safe shortlist worth memorizing:

  • Hydration: hyaluronic acid, glycerin, panthenol, aloe vera
  • Emollients: squalane, caprylic/capric triglyceride, jojoba oil
  • Barrier and antioxidant support: niacinamide, vitamin E, hemp seed oil, argan oil
  • Actives: salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, retinol, lactic acid, sulfur
  • Sun protection: zinc oxide, titanium dioxide

Six to eight names a client can actually hold in their head beats a hundred-name avoidance list they'll never open.
